There are many sources of information that might be useful in an environmental scan. Two particularly useful websites include FEDSTATS (www.fedstats.gov) and the United Nations (www.un.org). The FEDSTATS page links 100 federal agencies, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Department of Commerce, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The United Nations page provides links to its Economic and Social Development division, which supports programs related to population, development trends, statistics, and others.

Use the sites to help answer the following questions:

  1. What is the current (to the minute) population of the United States? What is the projected population of the United States in 2050?
  2. What population or social trends can be identified with UN information?
