Ethics in anthropology and fieldwork.

American Anthropological Association
  • Click onto the "Ethics" link. It contains several different papers on ethics issues, including "common dilemmas" faced by anthropologists.
  • Read some of these papers and try to envision why it is necessary for the AAA to compile these guidelines. If you were a member of a community being studied by an anthropologist, what rights would you want to make sure were protected before you agreed to answer any questions?
  • On the same link (American Anthropological Association, "Ethics" link) there is another link to the Handbook on Ethical Issues in Anthropology edited by Joan Cassell and Sue-Ellen Jacobs. Click onto the section entitled, "Cases and Solutions." It contains several cases of ethical dilemmas faced by actual anthropologists in their field settings. Read any two cases, and see if you agree with the anthropologists' decisions and the outcome of the cases as described.
