Active cell  The cell in which you are currently working.
Argument list  The collection of cells, cell ranges, and values listed in the comma-separated list between a function’s parentheses.
Assumption cells  Cells upon which other formulas depend and whose values can be changed to observe their effect on a worksheet's entries.
Cell  The Excel worksheet element located at the intersection of a row and a column and identified by a cell reference.
Cell contents  The text, formulas, or numbers you type into a cell.
Cell range  One or more cells that form a rectangular group.
Cell reference  A cell's identification consisting of its column letter(s) followed by its row number.
Editing  Modifying the contents of a cell.
Footer  Text that appears automatically at the bottom of each printed page in the footer margin.
Formula  Expression that begins with an equal sign and consists of cell references, arithmetic operators, values, and Excel built-in functions (see Chapter 6) that result in calculated value.
Formula bar  Appears below the menu bar and displays the active cell's contents.
Function  A built-in or prerecorded formula that provides a shortcut for complex calculations.
Header  Text that appears automatically at the top of each printed page in the header margin.
Menu bar  Contains Excel menus.
Mouse pointer  Indicates the current position of the mouse.
Name box  Appears on the left of the formula bar and displays either the active cell's address or its assigned name.
Pointing  Using the mouse to select a cell range while writing a formula.
Sheet tab  Contains the sheet's name.
Sheet tab scroll buttons  The buttons you click to scroll through an Excel workbook's sheet tabs.
Spreadsheet  A popular program used to analyze numeric information and help make meaningful business decisions based on the analysis.
Standard toolbar  Contains buttons that execute popular menu bar commands such as Print, Cut, and Insert Table.
Status bar  Bar appearing at the bottom of the display that shows general information about the worksheet and selected keyboard keys.
Task Pane  A dialog window that provides a convenient way to use commands, gather information, and modify Excel documents.
Text (entry)  Any combination of characters that you can type on the keyboard, including symbols.
Value (entry)  Numbers that represent a quantity, date, or time.
What-if analysis  Making changes to spreadsheets and reviewing their effect on other values.
Workbook  Collection of one or more individual worksheets.
Workbook window  Document window open in Excel.
Worksheets  They resemble pages in a spiral-bound workbook like the ones you purchase and use to take class notes.
