Add-in  A specialized feature of Excel that not everyone uses on a regular basis.
Answer report  The most popular Solver report, which lists the target cell, the changing cells with their original and final values, constraints, and data about the constraints.
Binding  A resource constraint that is a limiting factor.
Constrained optimization  A technique whereby you specify a set of constraints and an outcome or result that you want minimized or maximized.
Constraint  A limitation on the values that a cell can have.
Equation-solving  Goal-seeking or back-solving method such as the method used by the Goal Seek command.
Goal Seek  A worksheet command that works backward to compute an unknown value that produces the final, optimized result you desire.
Goal Seek objective  The end result you want to achieve using goal seek techniques.
Limit report  A Solver report that displays the range of values that the changing cells can assume, based on the constraints you have defined.
Linear programming problem  Such problems involve one or more unknowns and an equal number of equations.
Object function  The cell containing a function whose value you want to optimize and whose value is affected by a change in the decision variables.
Precedent value  The value on which a formula, or result, is directly or indirectly based.
Product mix  The quantity of each product to sell in order to generate the greatest profit.
Resource allocation problem  An optimization problem in which productive resources (people, raw materials, time, and so on) can be used in a variety of places or in different products, and in which those resources must be distributed in the best way possible.
Sensitivity report  A Solver report that shows how sensitive the current solution is to changes in the adjustable cells.
Slack  The quantity of a resource that has not been used or allocated.
