Chapter 16: Scenery
  1. Visit the site for the International Theater Design Archive at http://www.siue.edu/ITDA. Look at the scenic design collection by playwright. Select William Shakespeare and choose a script with more than one production available. Examine two different design approaches to the same text. How do they differ? Upon looking at the scenic designs, can you see a visual metaphor being created? Does the design place the production into a particular time and place? Which one do you prefer? Why?
  2. Visit the website for the Prague Quadrennial 2003 at http://www.pq.cz/english/index.html. This international showcase for designers has a unique history, providing an amazing venue for exhibition of theatrical design. Explore the site. What sections hold particular interest to you?
  3. Visit the Digital Set Design site at http://www.digitalsetdesign.com. Although this is not a U.S. company, the site provides some striking visuals related to projections and virtual stages. Explore the website thoroughly. How does this type of work translate to stage? Is it effective? Is technology changing the shape of theater?
