The chorale is a hymn used in Lutheran church service, sung in the vernacular-German, in Baroque times. Most of them had been adapted from folk songs or Catholic hymns. A cantata was written for chorus, vocal soloists, organ and a small orchestra, with a newly written text related to specific Epistle readings.
