The radical developments in science, art, culture and politics in the 20th Century had a tremendous impact on the way in which humans perceive the world. Artists, writers and musicians alike began exploring the ways in which these dramatic developments shook fundamental human beliefs and expectations to their core. Musician's began to express themselves using revolutionary new approaches that reflected a sense of a world that could no longer be governed by traditionally accepted structures, forms and principles. Preestablished relationships and expectations became less important in composition, requiring listeners of modern music to rely more on internal cues within individual works.
