Sociologists and government agencies share a need for timely, accurate, and complete data regarding crime rates. The Federal Bureau of Investigation provides an online examination of crime statistics and a look at the agency itself (http://www.fbi.gov) Click on "Most Wanted," then answer the following question.
  1. Who are currently the top 10 most-wanted fugitives in the United States according to the FBI? What crimes are they accused of committing?

After answering the preceding question, click the "Back" button on your browser, then click on "Library and Reference," then click on the Uniform Crime Reports link and answer the following questions:

  1. According to the data in the UCR section, do overall crime rates appear to be going up or down from 1995 to 2001?
  2. Choose one crime in particular and track it over the last half-decade. Is the rate going up or down? What might explain this change?
  3. What is NIBRS and how does it aid in the attempt to acquire more accurate crime data?
  4. In 2001, how many law enforcement agents were assaulted? How many were killed in the line of duty?
  5. Which category of persons is most likely to be the victim of a hate crime in terms of race? In terms of religion? In terms of sexual orientation?
  6. What is NIPC? Why is this an important program of the FBI?
  7. Why is the collection of crime data so important to social scientists?

This chapter looks at organized crime, which dominates the world of illegal business. Jerry Capeci's Gangland (http://www.ganglandnews.com) is a good site for information about organized crime.
  1. Choose any two of the button men or wise guys. List five interesting things you learned about those individuals.
  2. Read the article about Gregory Scarpa under the daily news column. What are some of the theories about Scarpa's death?
  3. Read the family history of the Colombo family. Who is the current boss of the family? What are some interesting facts you learned about the family?
  4. Read the family history of the Gambino family. Who is the current boss of the family? What are some interesting facts you learned about the family?
  5. Click on the women's page and read about the women who are involved with the crime families. What did you learn?
