The Southern Poverty Law Center (http://www.splcenter.org) is a nonprofit organization that combats hate, intolerance, and discrimination through education and litigation. Go to the center's website, link to the "Intelligence Project," then "List of Hate Groups," and answer the following questions:
  1. Scroll down the page and examine the map showing the locations of hate groups in the United States. Are any hate groups located in your home state? If so, which ones are they? If none are listed in your home state, do neighboring states have hate groups? Which ones?
  2. Link to "Hate Symbols." The drop of blood is one of the Ku Klux Klan's best-known symbols. What does it represent to Klan members?
  3. What does ZOG stand for? What do these groups believe about the U.S. government?
  4. What are the 14 words, and what did the Order do?
  5. Link to "Hate Incidents." How many hate incidents occurred last year in your home state or in the state where you attend school? Briefly describe at least three of those incidents.
  6. Select three groups from the list of hate groups (for example, Ku Klux Klan, Neo-Confederate, and so on). Type each name into the search bar for Yahoo or some other search engine and go to the homepage for each group. Briefly summarize your reaction to each group's philosophy.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the lure of gold drew people from all over the world to California, turning the sparsely settled territory into a culturally and racially diverse society. At its website, the Oakland Museum of California details how prejudice and discrimination against various racial and ethnic groups intensified during the Gold Rush. To learn more, go to the museum's website (http://www.museumca.org/goldrush/fever16-di.html) and read the article titled "Law, Order, and Justice for Some-Discrimination." Then answer the following questions:
  1. How were Chinese miners treated?
  2. Who were the Hounds, and what was their main objective?
  3. Which group of people faced the most prejudice and discrimination? How did most White Americans feel toward that group?
  4. Ultimately, what efforts were directed toward that group?
  5. Can you think of any contemporary examples of discrimination that involve either yourself or someone you know?
  6. Briefly summarize what you consider to be your attitude toward persons of another color, race, or ethnicity. Based on what you have learned in this chapter, are you prejudiced or discriminatory? Explain.
