The Center for American Women and Politics (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~cawp/) is devoted to promoting greater understanding of women's participation in politics. Click on "2002 Fact Sheets," then on "2002 Fact Sheet Summary" and answer the following questions:
  1. How many state senate seats did women hold in 2002?
  2. How many state house seats did women hold in 2002?
  3. By how much has the number of women serving in state legislatures increased since 1969?
  4. Across the country, how many women held statewide elected office? How many of those women were Democrats? How many were Republicans?
  5. List the 10 states with the highest percentage of female state legislators. Was your state one of them?
  6. How many of the women serving in statewide elected office were non-White Hispanics?
  7. How many of the women serving in the 106th U.S. Congress were non-White Hispanics?

In this chapter, we have learned that women remain noticeably politically underrepresented. To learn more about women and politics, visit the Facts & Findings section of the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). (http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~cawp/Facts.html ). The mission of CAWP is to promote a greater understanding and knowledge about women's participation in politics and government and to enhance women's influence and leadership in public life. From Facts and Findings, scroll down to State-by-State Historical Summary, and click on "State-by-state listing available here." Select your home state, or the state where your school is located, on the map and answer the following question:
  1. Who was the first woman elected to the U.S. Congress in your state? In what year was she elected?

Scroll to the top of the page and link to the Homepage. Click on What's News at the top of the page:

  1. Select one of the current press releases and write a brief summary of it.

Return to the Homepage and click on Fact Sheets. Scroll down to Women Candidates and Winners, and then Historical. Under "Select from this list," select "Presidential and Vice Presidential --- Women Presidential and Vice Presidential Candidates. Click on "Get it," and answer the following questions:

  1. At least how many women have sought the presidency of the United States?
  2. Who was the first woman to run for president of the United States? In what year?
  3. What is unique about this woman?
  4. Who was the first African-American woman to run for president of the United States? In what year?
  5. What was unique about this woman?
  6. Do you think a woman will become president of the United States during your lifetime? Why or why not?
