Question 1:

Computer-assisted groups can be a very effective way to maintain on-going discussions between members of the group. However, the electronic media removes nonverbal cues and written text may not transmit the full message. Go to http://www.socialpsychology.org/forums/sforum.htm and select a forum. Read some of the statements and responses. Based on your readings, or based on your own experience using e-mail or instant messaging software, develop a list of 5 potential problems that you can anticipate occurring in a computer-assisted group. Also, recommend potential “work arounds” to these difficulties.

Question 2:

At the Industry Week Web site (http://www.industryweek.com/Columns/ASP/columns.asp?ColumnId=563), there is an interesting overview of some of the research on proxemics across cultures. Read the article and discuss where you position yourself when you get in an elevator with only a few people inside.

Do you move away from the people or move to the back of the elevator?

How would you react to the situation described in the article of how someone from the Philippines may position themselves in an elevator you are riding in?

Describe how your class seating patterns are or are not comfortable in terms of personal space?

Do you believe that the seating patterns encourage or discourage communication with your classmates?
