Studying the Human Past

Overview

Conclusions about the past—even scientific conclusions—can seem to many people as if they are magically drawn out of the air (at best) or (at worst) simply wild guesses. This chapter shows how the scientific method is applied to the study of the past, reiterating the uniformitarian theme that the present is the key to the past. These ideas are vital for a full understanding of the material to come in the next three chapters.
