Modern Theater: 1945 to 1990

From 1945 to 1980, many movements were in evidence, including absurdism, the "angry young men" of England, and documentary drama in Germany. The two leading American dramatists—Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams—worked in a style that could be described as selective realism. Happenings, multimedia, environmental theater, and "poor theater" brought other options to the theatrical scene. In addition, in America the musical reached a golden age in the 1940s. At the same time, artists began to break away from commercial theaters, as off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway, and regional theaters began to attract attention nationwide. African-American theater artists wrote plays and created theater organizations that focused on racial issues confronting American society.
