Profile of a Production

This chapter examines how all of the elements that have been discussed in Chapters 1 through 8 come together in a production of Big River produced by Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles. Deaf West is a company that was founded to bring deaf, hearing-impaired, and hearing audiences and artistic personnel together. This production, which is staged in American Sign Language and also spoken English, is not the first such interpretation of classic drama that Deaf West has created. They also have done productions such as Romeo and Juliet, and A Streetcar Named Desire.

This production of Big River began in a seventy-five-seat theater in North Hollywood, then moved to the 750-seat Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles before finally moving to the American Airlines Theatre in New York City. With each move, changes were made to the design and cast of the show.

The chapter traces the production through photographs of the rehearsal process as well as reproductions of drawings made by the show's designers.
