What's New

  • Eight new part ending video cases, all written by author Charles Hill, explore current companies and topics and have accompanying video programs, which were developed exclusively for the fifth edition of the book. Four of the videos were shot on location in coordination with the featured organizations and include exclusive interviews with executives. (Starbucks: Building Relationships with Coffee Suppliers, Exporting Popcorn Products to Global Markets Featuring Cretors & Co., Creating a Global Brand Featuring BPAmoco, and The International Monetary Fund: Economic Aid in South Korea and Uganda).

  • Each chapter now includes two exercises titled GlobalEdge Research Tasks, created by Tunga Kiyak and Tomas Hult of the CIBER Center at Michigan State. These exercises challenge students to solve problems similar to those faced by practicing international business managers and acquaint them with the tools and data real managers use and are ideal for web-based courses.

  • The enhanced Student Resource CD includes 8 video cases linked to the part ending video cases in the text, an interactive exercise based on Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, and the Global Business Plan Project, which helps students create their own plan for launching a new global business venture.

  • New material has been inserted wherever appropriate to reflect recent academic work or important current events. For example, Chapter 2 now contains a section on "The New World Order and Global Terrorism" which discusses the nature of global terrorism and its implication for international business in the wake of the attacks of September 11th, 2001, on the United States. Chapter 5 has been updated to discuss the new round of talks sponsored by the WTO that are aimed at reducing barriers to trade, particularly in agriculture (the Doha Round). Chapter 6 now discusses the slump in foreign direct investment flows that took place in 2001 and 2002. The section on the European Union in Chapter 8 has been revised to reflect the plans to admit ten more member states into the EU on May 1st, 2004. In Chapter 12, there have been additions to the section discussing how multinationals can gain a competitive advantage by leveraging skills between subsidiaries, reflecting the substantial academic research addressing this issue that has been published in recent years.
