It is important for adults to set an example for children in their care. Modeling is a powerful way of teaching children. In early childhood programs, adults should model (1) gentleness and nonviolent problem solving; (2) self-esteem in the areas of virtue, power, significance, and competence; (3) an acceptance of and respect for diversity; and (4) a positive attitude toward learning. The early childhood educator must fill the role of the teacher as well as the role of the master learner. To be a master learner, the early childhood educator must observe and learn from and along with the children to create an emergent curriculum that facilitates physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.
