This book is approximately one-third shorter than traditional brief texts for American history. Materials on the companion PSI CD and on the Online Learning Center complement the text, allowing students to focus more on any aspect or area of history they choose, or to simply master the basics of American history with the text itself.
Primary Source Investigator, a CD packaged free with every new copy of the text, features mini-documentaries and hundreds of primary sources such as documents, images, maps, and charts. PSI offers students the opportunity to investigate and work with the sources, take notes, and craft a paper or presentation.
"Interactive Learning" sections in each chapter point readers to specific resources on the PSI CD and on the Online Learning Center. For example, in Chapter 16 readers are directed to the PSI CD for the mini-documentary movie "Edward Curtis and Native American Culture" and two interactive maps detailing the Native American Expulsion and Mining Towns, and to the Online Learning Center for a "Where Historians Disagree" essay, "The 'Frontier' and the West."
Many of the maps within the text also appear as interactive maps on the Online Learning Center, accompanied by related quizzes and questions.
“Where Historians Disagree” essays, featured on the Online Learning Center, demonstrate that history consists of many complex stories that are often open to interpretation.
The text's four-color design and solid illustration and mapping program provide a wealth of visual learning aids. Marginal notes highlight key terms, events, and concepts as they appear within the narrative.
"America in the World" essays, available on the Online Learning Center, provide global context and demonstrate how other histories are woven into that of the United States.
