After reading Chapter 10, students should:
be able to define the family
be familiar with the different forms of family, the methods of tracing descent and inheritance, the rules of residence, and the rules of authority
be familiar with the rules of marriage, including endogamy, exogamy, and the incest taboo
be familiar with the four patterns of marriage relationships: monogamy, polygyny, polyandry, and group marriage
be familiar with the patterns and rules of courtship, including homogamy, the matching hypothesis, complementary needs, and the significance of exchange theory as a unifying link among these factors
be acquainted with life within marriage in the United States
be familiar with the family life course, including parenthood
be aware of the significance of two-income families
be familiar with alternative lifestyles beyond the traditional nuclear family
be familiar with the challenges for American families and American society: family violence, child abuse, and incest; child care; divorce; and care for the elderly
understand the sociological perspectives applied to the family
