After reading Chapter 4, students should:
be able to define a group and be familiar with the different types of groups: primary, secondary, in-groups, out-groups, and reference groups
be familiar with the group dynamics that are discussed in the chapter: group size (dyads and triads), leadership (types and styles), social loafing, social dilemmas, groupthink, and conformity
be familiar with the difference types of formal organization: voluntary, coercive, and utilitarian
understand how bureaucracy functions
be familiar with the characteristics of bureaucracies, as described by Max Weber
understand the problems and limitations of bureaucracies: trained incapacity, Parkinson's law, and the iron law of oligarchy
understand the informal side of formal organizations
be familiar with the application of the conflict and interactionist perspectives to understanding formal organization
be familiar with the strategies for humanizing bureaucracies
