After reading Chapter 5, students should:
be able to define deviance and understand its nature from a sociological perspective
be familiar with the social properties of deviance
understand the relationship between deviance and social control
be familiar with the five main sociological theories of deviance: anomie/structured strain, cultural transmission, conflict, labeling, and control
be able to define crime and understand its distinguishing properties
be familiar with the different forms of crime: index crimes, juvenile crime, organized crime, white-collar crime (including corporate and government crime), and victimless crime
be acquainted with the different strategies for measuring crime
be familiar with the relationship between drugs and crime
understand the implications of women's involvement with crime
be familiar with the criminal justice system, including its key components: the police, the courts, and prisons
be familiar with the purposes of imprisonment: punishment, rehabilitation, deterrence, and selective confinement
