annotating  a postreading technique: underlining or highlighting the most important points within a text
linking  a reading technique: mentally drawing connections between new material and old material
paraphrase  restatement of a passage in one's own words; differs from summary in that a paraphrase can be as long as the original
prereading  a process for preparing to read new information
postreading  a process for helping to retain what was just read
signposts  visual cues within a text that highlight key points; examples include titles, chapter previews and summaries, headings, subheadings, and bold or italicized print
summary  condensed restatement of a passage in one's own words, including only main points and key supporting details of the original text
visualizing  an active reading technique: creating a mental picture of what the author is saying or describing
