Answering these questions enables you to relate material from the text to your own personal experiences.
  1. Write a canto (on the order of one of Dante’s) that describes your visit to Hell in your own day and time. Assign some contemporary personalities to the various rings of your Inferno and try to make the punishment fit the crime.
  2. Would you prefer to have your college or university run on the order of the medieval University of Bologna? Why or why not? In what ways is your college or university indebted to the medieval university?
  3. Create a work of art (visual, literary, musical) that reflects your own version of Hell and Heaven.
  4. Using the writings of Hildegard of Bingen as a model, write a version of your own mystical vision(s).
  5. To what extent do religion and religious ritual give order to your personal life “from cradle to grave”?
