Answering these questions enables you to relate material from the text to your own personal experiences.
  1. How might Jesus have responded to the following line from the Buddha’s sermons: “…he in whom self has become extinct…will desire neither worldly nor heavenly pleasures.” How might the Buddha have responded to the following line from the Sermon on the Mount: “You must…be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect”?
  2. Compare the Sermon on the Mount with the selection from Exodus in the Hebrew Bible (Chapter 2). What differences in tone, style, and content do you detect?
  3. What aspects of your religious upbringing and education have been clarified (or challenged) by this chapter?
  4. In your view, why did so many followers of the Buddha grow to regard him as a savior? Might the same explanation be given for Jesus as Messiah?
