Answering these questions enables you to relate material from the text to your own personal experiences.
  1. Explain the nature of each of Bacon’s Idols in your own words, giving an example of your own (or others’) “errors” in perception and understanding that illustrates each.
  2. Make a case FOR Descartes’ proposition, “I think, therefore I am.” Now make an equally convincing case AGAINST this proposition.
  3. Which of the paintings illustrated in Chapter 23 is the most “true to life”? Why so? Which looks most like a photograph? How so? What makes a work of art “true to life”?
