From a scientific standpoint, trying to devise an experimental system that mimics the conditions of the early earth is an inherently frustrating endeavor. While one might make some interesting hypotheses and experimental observations, there is no way to know for sure if experimental conditions are anything like those that really existed billions of years ago. Why do scientists continue in this quest?

Many environmentalists are concerned about global warming and ozone depletion. How would we know if current changes in climate are man made or just part of natural, long term cycles? Even if they aren't, if life has survived changes in the past why shouldn't it survive these changes?
