  1. Using the information at the Energy Information Administration site at http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/aer, answer the questions below:
    1. In the year 2000, what renewable source provided the most energy to the U.S.?
    2. How did this amount compare to the amount of energy obtained from fossil fuels?
    3. How much crude oil was produced and how much was imported in the year 2000? How do these numbers compare with 20 and 40 years ago? What does this trend indicate?
    4. How much coal was produced in the year 2000? Is that more or less than 20 years ago? Again, what does this trend indicate?

    1. What forms of renewable energy is the government researching?
    2. What initiatives are being taken to improve energy efficiency?
    3. Are there competing interests within the government that might want to block these programs? Why or why not?
