After reading and studying this chapter you should be able to:
  1. Describe the properties of the three main groups of rock and explain how they are formed.
  2. Give an overview of geologic time.
  3. Explain plate tectonics theory and the evidence that supports it.
  4. Differentiate between divergent, transform, and convergent boundaries and understand the features associated with each type.
  5. Identify the two primary tectonic forces and the kinds of landforms that are associated with them.
  6. Explain the three kinds of gradational processes and describe the landforms each produces.
  7. Understand and explain the difference between mechanical and chemical weathering.
  8. Distinguish between the effects of running water in humid and arid areas, and explain the difference between groundwater and surface water erosion.
  9. Explain how and why glaciers form, and describe the unique types of landforms they leave behind.
  10. Understand coastal processes and the landform features produced by them.
  11. Describe the landforms produced by the erosive and depositional power of wind.
