1.3 Death on Our Screens

Death in the visual mass media is surrounded by controversy. Violence and death combined make decisions about content complex. Unrealistic portrayals of violence can make viewers less sensitive to both real violence and its victims, increase unwarranted fears of becoming a victim, and contribute to aggressive behavior. On the other side of the controversy, it is said that we are simply reverting to a harmless form of entertainment to deal with what we fear. This article presents some of the issues on both sides of the argument. After you finish reading about death in the mass media, answer the following questions.

1
Name four recent blockbuster movies that have international ratings indicating violent content and restrictions on the age of the viewer.
2
From reading this article, give two examples of televised programming where the authors question the lack of discretion of the broadcasters.
3
Summarize the authors' argument concerning the causal relationship between demonstrated interest in violent material and some form of violent activity. Include their ideas about documented characteristics of violent offenders.
