4.4 Coping Skills

Physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals work in environments where death is more commonplace than it is in most walks of life. This includes "first responders" such as emergency medical technicians (EMTs), paramedics, and search-and-rescue personnel, as well as firefighters and police officers who provide aid to victims at the scene of an accident or disaster. Also on the front line are those in the emergency room. In death-saturated environments, information and support are useful. The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) provides education for both the physician and the consumer. Access this organization's homepage. Scroll through the quick links. Click on one that interests you and read through the titles of the articles posted. For example, in Bioterrorism you might find the College's recommendations for a strategic plan in response to an event where weapons of mass destruction are used. What other information can you find under the topic of Bioterrorism?
