8.5 Grief Work: Does Talking Help?

Several recent European studies have reported that survivors may recover from the death of a loved one without talking with others and disclosing emotions. (See Margaret Stroebe, Wolfgang Stroebe, Henk Schut, Emmanuella Zech, and Jan van den Bout, "Does Disclosure of Emotions Facilitate Recovery from Bereavement? Evidence From Two Prospective Studies, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, February 2002, Volume 70, Number 1) News reports of this research have been published in the U.S. popular press. Review this article reporting on the research and respond to the following:

1
What was the composition of each of the two samples?
2
How was the research design constructed?
3
What method(s) were used to collect the data?
4
What were the results and the researchers' conclusions?
5
Assuming that both of the sample populations came from England or the Netherlands, explain how the results might be due to cultural attitudes and practices.
