Most employers have to evaluate hundreds of résumés each week. If you want your résumé to have a good chance of being read by prospective employers, you must invest time and energy not only in its content, but also in its look. Review your résumé and answer yes or no to each of the following questions: - Does it avoid typos and grammatical errors?
- Does it avoid using personal pronouns (such as I and me )?
- Does it clearly identify what you have done and accomplished?
- Does it highlight your accomplishments rather than your duties?
- Does it exceed two pages in length?
- Does it have correct contact information?
- Does it have an employment objective that is specific and focuses on the employer's needs as well as your own?
- Does it have at least one-inch margins?
- Does it use a maximum of two typefaces or fonts?
- Does it use bullet points to emphasize your skills and accomplishments?
- Does it avoid use of underlining?
- Is the presentation consistent? (Example: If you use all caps for the name of your most recent workplace, do you do that for previous workplaces as well?)
The more "yes" answers you gave, the more likely your résumé will attract an employer's attention and get you a job interview! |
