The FBI collects statistics on hate crimes from 9,500 law enforcement agencies in forty-five states and Washington, D.C., covering seventy-five percent of the U.S. population. Hate crime offenses cover incidents motivated by race, religion, sexual orientation, and ethnicity/national origin.
