The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a major source of funding for sociologists. Explore the Sociology Program page at the NSF website (http://www.nsf.gov/sbe/ses/sociol/start.htm). To get some idea of contemporary sociologists' research interests, click on the link which reads "Sociology Program Awards Search" in the middle of the page (under "Grant/Award Administration and Information"). Doing so takes you to a page with links to brief descriptions of recent grants awarded to sociologists. Read through some of the titles & abstracts and answer the following questions.
  1. What do these titles and abstracts tell you about the substantive topics of interest to sociologists? Before taking this class, are these the topics you would have associated with sociology?
  2. Is the range of topics fairly wide or narrow? How would you characterize it?
  3. Look at the size of the monetary awards. How much does it cost to complete a sociological study? Are you surprised by this? What does the length of the award period tell you?
  4. How does the language in these abstracts differ from the summaries of sociological research that you might read in a newspaper article? Is the language much more technical, for example?
