In this chapter you have learned about gender inequality based mainly on social statistics compiled in the United States. To access data on stratification by gender in hundreds of other countries, go to the GenderStats page at the World Bank's website (http://devdata.worldbank.org/genderstats/home.asp).
  1. Select a country and then click on "Summary Gender Profile" on the left side of your screen. Which country did you select?
  2. What percentage of the population is female?
  3. . What is the life expectancy of females compared to males?
  4. Compare the adult illiteracy rates for males and females.
  5. How have the trends for the percentages above changed since 1980?
  6. Go to the top of the page and select United States for the country. Click on "Summary Gender Profile." Compare the percentages for the United States to the country you first selected. Summarize your findings.

The needs of the aging population vary by racial and ethnic group, as does their access to essential resources. Organizations like the University of North Dakota's National Resource Center on Native American Aging (http://www.med.und.nodak.edu/depts/rural/nrcnaa/) acknowledge these facts and strive to assist the elderly in particular racial and ethnic groups.
  1. To learn about the Center's goals and activities, click on "Links" and then the "National Society for American Indian Elderly" link. What is the mission of the National Society for American Indian Elderly?
  2. What percent of eligible American Indian senior citizens receive services?
  3. What percent live at or below the poverty level?
  4. Click on "Tribal Profiles" on the left side of your screen. Select a tribe.
  5. What is this tribe doing to address the needs of its elders?
