Edward Estlin Cummings was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and earned bachelor's and master's degrees from Harvard University before serving as a volunteer ambulance driver in France during World War I. His experimental punctuation, line division, and capitalization brought him wide attention and acclaim as an innovative and entertaining poet.
