Take a look at the story's second paragraph. Jot down or type out all the words and phrases that relate directly to the dead priest and his former possessions. What pattern emerges? What connotations do the words in your list have? What might Joyce have been driving at here? How does this passage relate to the rest of the story?

Read through this essay until you have a clear concept of the term "epiphany" as it relates to Joyce's work. Do you agree with the essay's author that the narrator experiences an epiphany at the end of "Araby"? If not, why not? If so, what is the nature of the epiphany?
