General Information:

1. What operating systems will program run on?

Testing was performed on Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows ME, and Windows XP machines. No problems were found using the GDP portion of the program. However, the original version of GD9 had problems when using Word 2002 (XP), then returning to GD9. The program may launch Word 2002 on the first try, but not on successive attempts. Students with Word 2002 need the GDP -XP upgrade. There are no known issues with Windows XP.

2. What files can be deleted from a student’s GDP folder without affecting the GDP software?

The following files can be deleted/removed from a student's folder, and the student should still be able to log on successfully. Normally these files will regenerate when the student logs on.

GDPinuse.dat - this is a temporary file that should revert to zero bytes at logoff.

Grade.rpt - this file is created when Instructor Management is launched. If missing, it regenerates.

Gdptrace.log - this file records the last exercise the student scores.

Individual .drp files – although these can be deleted, they are not re-created by the program. When deleted, the student work for the lesson cannot be viewed. The instructor has the option of crediting it or having the student re-do the lesson.

Files that cannot be deleted:

** ClassName .lst – On campus, this file is inside each class folder. If it becomes corrupt (0 KB), create a new class folder and move student folders into the new class folder.

StudentName . GDP file is mandatory and cannot be deleted.

3. How do I create an Export file in GDP ?

This is used for distance learning lessons and to transfer lessons between home and campus. The Export file is the student’s FirstName+LastName+.EXP, for example: SummerRains . EXP

NOTE : Export files are stored as one compressed file with .EXP as the file extension. As more lessons are done, perform the Export function again to add/include the new lessons.

1.        In GDP , on the upper left of the screen, click on File then on Export Student Data.

2.        Click on the first file.

3.        Scroll to the bottom of the list and hold down the Shift key while clicking on the last file. All files should now be highlighted. NOTE : On some PCs all files do not highlight, and require you to depress the CTRL key while clicking each file, one at a time, until all files are highlighted.

4.        Stored In Location – Note the save location. If saving lessons to floppy disk, the default location is the A: drive, inside the GDPdata folder, and appears as: A:\GDPdata\YourName.EXP

5.        Click the EXPORT button.

6.        If you previously created an Export file, respond YES to the prompt "Do you wish to overwrite the existing Export file?" Otherwise, the new lessons are not added to the Export file.

7.        The program automatically exits the Export window.

8.        If using GDP XP (version 1.0.0.91 or higher), click the WEB button at the top of the GDP window to launch the Student Web Site and upload the Export file. If not, see the next step.

9.        For the original GD9 version, exit the GD9 program and go to the ‘How to Export’ instructions below.

4. How do I export and import files in GDP?

First, Create an Export file, then follow one of these instructions.

Distance Learning Students: The preferred method is to upload the Export file directly to the Internet. This way you immediately receive a list of uploaded lessons and documents, or a reason lessons did not upload. When e-mailing the Export file, an e-mail reply is sent to you stating only that “the GDP upload was successful” or a reason it was unsuccessful.

** Upload Distance Learning lessons to the Web site:

  • Using GDP XP and clicking the Web button should bring you to the upload Web address.
NOTE: If using the original GD9 version, then exit GD9, launch the Internet, and change the Web address to: http://gdpupload.mhhe.com
  • Click Browse and change the Look In field to the floppy drive or hard drive. If saving to floppy disk, double-click to open the GDPData folder.
NOTE : Only select the .EXP file. Do not attach any other files.
  • Click on your StudentName .EXP file and click the OPEN button.
**If you don’t see the .EXP, it is the only file that is your F irstname+ L astname.
  • Click the UPLOAD button.
  • The screen will then list the uploaded lessons or give the reason it was unsuccessful.

Send Distance Learning lessons as an E-mail attachment:

  • Prepare an e-mail addressed to gdpupload@mhhe.com
  • Subject Line: type your name.
  • E-mail Body, type: My export file.
  • Click the Attach or Insert File button. (If your e-mail provider has instructions, use them.)
  • If applicable, click the BROWSE button.
  • Look In box: click the down arrow and browse to the location of your .EXP file.
For floppy disk, change the Look In to the Floppy A Drive and double-click the GDPdata folder.
NOTE : Attach only the .EXP file, and no other files.
  • Click the .EXP file then the Open button (the filename is your First+LastName.EXP ). The attached file address should appear in the Browse area.
  • Click the Send button.
  • Within approximately ½ hour, you will receive an e-mail that the “upload was successful” or the reason it was unsuccessful.

Import lessons between Home and Campus:

  • Insert the floppy disk with the StudentName .EXP file.
  • Launch the GDP program.
  • Under the File menu, select Import Student Data, and change the Look In box to drive A:.
  • Select the .EXP file and click Open. The work will load into the student Portfolio.

Instructor Importing to the Gradebook on a Standalone Instructor Workstation:

  • If the student is new, register him/her into a GDP class that saves to "Subdirectory."
  • The student provides the Export file on a floppy disk or as an e-mail file attachment.
NOTE : You need the student's exact login name and password.
  • In GDP, on the standalone Instructor Workstation, login as the student.
  • Click File on the Menu bar, and select Import Student Data.
  • Locate the student's .EXP file and click Open.
  • The student data will copy to the Classes subdirectory so the Gradebook can access it.

5. Why doesn’t my ‘Email’ button appear in my GDP standard toolbar?

The Email button will not appear if an e-mail program is not installed on the computer (e.g., Microsoft Outlook). Check the MS Word User Guide for information on the Email button.

 top

6. Why doesn’t my ‘Email’ button work in my GDP toolbar?

    1. The system may not be configured with MAPI and the system default email address.
Make sure the computer uses a MAPI-compliant email system and a default email address is set up.
Otherwise, use email (outside of GDP ) to send messages between the instructor and students.
    2. Instructor on Campus LAN – In Instructor Options, open the Settings dialog box, click the ClassSettings tab and enter, or verify, the Instructor's email address.
    3. Student on Campus LAN – The instructor may not have his/her email address in the Settings dialog box.
    4. Student using GDP at Home – The student email address OR instructor email address is missing or incorrect in the Settings dialog box. The student should log on, access Settings from the Options menu, and enter/correct the email address for the student and the instructor.

7. Why doesn’t my ‘Web’ button work in my GDP toolbar?

In the original GD9 version 1.0.0.57, the URL for the campus Web site is not specified in the Settings dialog box.

  • Instructor on Campus LAN – access Instructor Options, open the Settings dialog box, and enter the correct URL for the campus Web site.
  • Student on Home version – log onto GDP , access Settings from the Options menu, and enter the correct URL for the campus Web site.

8. Why does my GDP software launch very slowly?

Normally, this is server or workstation performance. Check the server load (resources) - memory on the server – it may open in memory first then copy across. Is the server backing up at the same time the GDP is being launched? If the virus checker views each file, set it to exclude . GDP and .DRP files.

4. How do I access my student’s data if I’m an instructor?

    1. Instructors cannot access a student’s work while that student is logged on. Do not try to access work for this student until the student has logged off.
    2. If the student is logged off, then one of the student's files may be corrupt. Normally, a message will appear on the screen denoting which file is corrupt. If not, begin by removing the GDPinuse.dat file from this student's folder and the Class folder for this student.
    3. If saving to a floppy disk and the student disk is still good:
      • If the corrupt file is identified, copy the file from the student data disk onto the network, or
      • Have the student create an Export file at home and import it at school.

 5. What do I do regarding the message, ‘ GDP has experienced a problem and needs to close’ when accessing student portfolios?

This can happen if an Instructor Options for a class is changed to reflect ‘Letter Grades.’ There is a problem when viewing letter grades in student portfolios. When this error message occurs, the Instructor Management program closes abruptly. Changing the grading criteria back to ‘Numeric Grades’ should resolve the situation.

top

6. When using the Instructor Management website, what do I do if the student documents and/or detailed reports do not appear?

Ensure the instructor and student used the same Email address for the student.

These can be caused when:

  • Uploading the name. GDP file. The student should create an Export file and upload it to the Web site. They can print the screen that shows which files uploaded successfully.
  • Excluding the .DRP and/or . DOC files when creating the Export file.
  • Changing their email address (under Options/Personal Information), then does not exit GD9. If a student changes their email address, they must exit and restart GDP for settings to become effective.
  • The clock battery on the PC is going bad. Have the student view lessons in the Portfolio and check the dates on the files. Sometimes the portfolio shows lessons dated prior to year 2000. The Instructor Management Web site (IMWS) does not allow viewing files created before 2000.

If all appears okay, have the student attach their Export file to an email addressed to Software Support at techsup@mcgraw-hill.com. In the body explain that the files are for a distance learning class that cannot be viewed at the IMWS.

7. What do I do if I can see that the student’s lessons are completed, but I can’t view the individual data?

If students omit the .doc files when initially uploading lessons, then later upload the .doc files, these files cannot be viewed at the IMWS. Students should always opt to Upload All lessons.

Campus Standard (Standalone) : Student data is stored on hard drives or floppy disks. To view student work, the instructor collects student data disks and updates Instructor Management on their workstation.

8. How do I install the GDP Standalone version to save student work to a network drive?

Contact Software Support 800-331-5094 for further information.

STUDENT INFORMATION:

 1. What does it mean when I get a ‘Insert Student Data Disk’ message when I try to login? [Answer is addressed to Instructor or Student?]

Explanation 1 : The floppy disk is unreadable. First run scandisk and fix any bad sectors.

Put a new floppy disk in the drive. If you have a previously used data disk, you need to login as a New student. Lessons previously done are still on the disk, however the program will not recognize them.

Explanation 2 :

  • If saving work to a floppy disk, then a disk is required.
    • If you have not previously logged on, insert a blank high-density disk.
    • If you previously logged on, files on the disk are unreadable. Login using a new floppy and notify the instructor because the files may also be corrupt on the Campus LAN .
  • [?]Standalone install: If you do not want students to use floppy disks, reinstall and specify a different location to store student data.
  • [?]Campus LAN and you want students to save to the network.
    • If no students have logged in, change the student data location - to do this, access Instructor Options, click Gradebook, select the class name, click Edit Class Information, select a different option for Student Data Location, and click Save.
    • If any student has logged in, the student location cannot be changed. Create a new class and transfer the students into the new class.

 top

2. Why doesn't my Performance Chart reflect all the timings that I've done?

When you have a better timing in a paragraph or handwritten paragraph exercise that precedes timing, then GDP uses the exercise results as the better timing. However, nothing is added to the Performance Chart because these exercises have no ‘goals.’ This results in a blank timing for that lesson.

Example : Lesson 14-G is a 1-minute handwrittenparagraph, and 14-H is the 2-minute timing. If the timing result for 14-G is better than 14-H, then the Performance Chart will be blank for Lesson 14.

top

3. How do I recover my password for GDP at school?

The original password cannot be viewed, however a new one can be created in Instructor Options by clicking Manage Student.

 top

4. What do I do regarding the message, ‘Cannot find Classes directory’, when using GDP at school?

The student data location is needed to launch GDP ; it is built into the shortcut icon. Always launch GDP from the Start, Programs, Irwin Keyboarding , and the GDP icon based on the install type (Campus Classes, Campus Standalone, or Distance Learning).

 top

5. What do I do if my login screen has another student’s name?

 This can occur when:

  • You are not using your own floppy disk or the disk was used in a previous class.
  • A previous student removed their data disk but did not exit GDP . Afterward, if you inserted your disk and continued, then tried to log off, GDP was actually logging off the previous student.

Always be sure to exit GDP . If GDP is already onscreen, incoming students should exit GDP without inserting their data disk, then login as usual.

top

6. Why can’t my instructor view my completed lessons even though I received an email saying ‘ GDP data was received successfully?’

In GDP , click Options,, then Personal Information, and ensure your email address is correct and matches the one at the IMWS by emailing the instructor.

 top

7. Can I recover my lessons if I accidentally click ‘New Student’ when I login to GDP ?

When you click New, the original StudentName. GDP file is overwritten. The . GDP file summarizes all lessons done. Lessons previously done are still in your folder, but the new . GDP file doesn’t recognize them as being done. Lessons can be recovered, as follows:

  • Campus LAN - If GDP is backed-up, the StudentName. GDP file can be copied in to replace the new one on the floppy disk/server, and the student data will be recognized.
  • Campus Standalone – If you did it at home and lessons are updated in Instructor Management, copy the StudentName. GDP file from the teacher workstation to your data disk.
  • Home version – If one of the above does not apply or a disk-copy has not been done, then no lessons cannot be recovered.
