If melody is the intuitive side of music, harmony can be understood as the intellectual side. Harmony gives the melody support, context, and structure. The study of harmony encompasses chord structure and progression throughout a musical work. An understanding of harmony enables a musician to harmonize single notes, and to improvise during a performance. The resources in this site provide a good basic introduction to music theory.
