The Baroque period in music is divided into three phases: early (1600-1640), middle (1640-1680), and late (1680-1750). Early baroque composers favored homophonic texture and emphasized the importance of the text in vocal music. The last vestiges of medieval modal tonality were replaced by major and minor scales during the middle phase, when Baroque style spread from Italy throughout Europe. The late phase was marked by a return to polyphonic texture. By the end of the Baroque period, instrumental compositions were as important as vocal compositions.
