After reading this chapter and analyzing the content, it is assumed that you can:

  1. Describe the distinguishing features of arthropods.

  2. List the subphyla of arthropods and be able to give an example of each.

  3. Discuss the features of arthropods that have contributed to their success as organisms.

  4. Describe a trilobite.

  5. Describe the appendages of chelicerates.

  6. Describe the distinguishing morphological characteristics of eurypterids, horseshoe crabs, and pycnogonids.

  7. Explain why horseshoe crabs are in the same subphylum as spiders.

  8. Describe the tagmata of arachnids.

  9. Describe the feeding, excretion, sensory reception, web–spinning, and reproductive mechanisms in spiders.

  10. List the dangerous spiders found in the United States and explain how their venom works.

  11. Contrast each of the following orders: Araneae, Scorpiones, Opiliones, and Acari.

  12. Explain how centipedes capture and subdue prey.
