  1. Compare and contrast autotrophic and heterotrophic organisms, phototrophic and chemotrophic organisms, herbivores and carnivores, and omnivores and insectivores.

  2. Explain the characteristics, advantages, and limitations of suspension feeding.

  3. Discuss the feeding adaptations of carnivores and herbivores.

  4. Describe how peristaltic activity propels food through the digestive tract.

  5. Compare and contrasts intracellular and extracellular digestion.

  6. Describe the structural modifications that increase the surface area of the intestine in vertebrates and invertebrates.

  7. Discuss the digestion (mechanical and enzymatic) and ultimate absorption of carbohydrates and proteins in vertebrates.

  8. Describe the emulsification, digestion, and absorption of lipids in the vertebrate gut.

  9. Relate how the hormones of the gastrointestinal tract assist in the coordination of gastrointestinal functions.

  10. Differentiate between saturated and unsaturated lipids and comment on how they relate to human health.
