President Martin Van Buren was elected as the Democratic candidate in 1836. Outwardly representing a continuation of Andrew Jackson's policies, Van Buren drew the ire of anti-Democratic politicians who had formed the new Whig Party under the leadership of Henry Clay. The Panic of 1837 -- caused by over-speculation of land in the west -- formed a large cloud over Van Buren's term.
