With little success in convincing Cherokee tribal authorities to surrender their lands to Georgia, state authorities arrested Chief John Ross. Ross, a key figure in the resistance movement, did not participate in the 1835 treaty negotiated between the state and Indian officials. These orders given to General Winfield Scott to remove the Cherokees from their lands were based on what some considered a fraudulent 1835 treaty. At least 2,000 Indians died along the route federal troops used to remove the Cherokees to lands west of the Mississippi.
