Thomas Jefferson was elected president in 1800, marking what some historians call the Second Revolution. With the 1800 election, the country witnessed its first major transfer of power from one political faction, the Federalists, to another, the Democratic-Republicans. The fact that this occurred peacefully caused some scholars to view this election as a turning point in American history, ensuring that future elections would also be peaceful. Also, Jefferson's election ensured the continued territorial expansion of the United States. In 1803, U.S. land holdings more than doubled with the Louisiana Purchase, perhaps one of Jefferson's greatest accomplishments as president.
