In 1795, the Treaty of Greenville was signed. The treaty came at the end of the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and resulted in local Indian tribes surrendering a substantial portion of their land in the Ohio area to the United States government. Settlers were then able to move farther to the north and the west to make their homes.
