AIDS  acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
Ethnicity  a group of people having a common heritage such as common customs, characteristics, language, and history.
hate crimes  crimes against people based on their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or religion.
human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)  the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS).
infant mortality  death of infants before one year of age.
life expectancy  the number of years a person is expected to live when born.
race  a group of people with similar physical traits, blood types, genetic patterns, and inherited characteristics.
years of potential life lost  the number of years between when a person is expected to live and the age of death; a measure of premature death.
