Information from a Tempe (Ariz.) Police Department activity log follows. Only the names and addresses have been changed. Write a story based on all the information available.
Incident: Aggravated assault/knife
Location: 100 E. Norwood, Tempe
Date: Monday
Time: 2340
Victim(s): Jeffrey Gordon Smith, 18, 210 E. Norwood, Tempe; William Russell Jones, 17, 137 E. Norwood, Tempe
Arrest made: No
Suspect(s): Unknown, 15 years old, white male, 5'8", 130 pounds, short, curly hair. Wearing jeans, Levis jacket. Carrying a knife with a 4-5" blade.
Details: Jones and Smith were searching the neighborhood around a friend's house for any suspects involved in a burglary from a vehicle at 210 E. Norwood. Jones and Smith located the described subject walking near 100 E. Norwood. They demanded that this subject tell them who he was, and what he was doing, when the subject pulled out a knife and told them not to "screw with" him. The suspect then chased Jones and Smith back to their vehicle with the knife held over his head. When Jones and Smith entered the vehicle, the suspect began trying to slash at Smith through the open passenger side window. The victims were able to drive away and there were no injuries.
Investigating officers: Cable/Cook
Supervisor: Forbes
Additional information from a Tempe Police Department incident report, written by an investigating officer, follows.
At approximately 2324 hours I was dispatched to 210 E. Norwood in regards to a burglary from a vehicle report. Upon my arrival at 2328 hours I contacted Mr. Michael J. Johnson, the complainant. Mr. Johnson advised the following: at approximately 2320 hours he heard a noise where his car was located and he went out to investigate.
Upon discovering his car had been burglarized, Mr. Johnson went back into the house to get his friend, Mr. Jeffrey G. Smith of 210 E. Norwood.
Smith and Johnson then searched the immediate area for suspects. None was found. At this time, approximately 2330 hours, a friend of theirs, Mr. William R. Jones of 137 E. Norwood, drove into Smith's driveway. Smith asked Jones to shine his lights on the area in front of the house and the area where the burglary took place (in the driveway just west of the house). He did and nothing was found. Smith then entered Jones' car, a 1979 Datsun, two-door, and they drove on Norwood hoping to find a suspect. Upon reaching Santa Cruz Drive, they headed north and then went west at the alley. They found nothing.
Upon approaching Grandview, they noticed an unknown, white male, 5'8" and 130 pounds, approximately 15 years of age, wearing blue jean jacket (fairly new), Levis
(blue) and who had brown curly hair, standing by the corner of Grandview and Norwood. Upon approaching the suspect, they stopped the car (on Norwood) and Mr. Smith got out to ask him (suspect) some questions.
Smith explained to the suspect that a friend of theirs had just been "ripped off," and did he know anything about it. Then Jones asked the suspect where he was, and what was he doing about five minutes ago. The suspect stated he was at the store getting cigarettes and when Mr. Jones asked to see proof, the suspect became violent. He asked Smith if he wanted to "screw with him and screw with his brother." (The suspect then pointed to a residential dwelling, 110 E. Norwood, indicating that's where his brother lives.) The suspect then took out a knife, approximately 5" in length. The suspect then held the knife (opened) over his head and again asked Mr. Smith if he wanted to "screw with him."
Mr. Smith then went to get into the car and again the suspect repeated the threat by waving the knife toward Mr. Smith.
When Mr. Smith got into the car, the suspect moved to the passenger window and began striking the door with the "butt end" of the knife. The suspect then reached through the open passenger window and made a stabbing gesture toward Mr. Smith.
As Mr. Jones was driving away, east on Norwood, the suspect was running alongside the vehicle still trying to stab Mr. Smith through the window. He was unable to keep up with the vehicle.
Mr. Jones then drove back toward 210 E. Norwood, parking his car one block east so the suspect would not know where Mr. Smith lives.
Upon completion of the burglary investigation, I went to 110 E. Norwood, the address that the suspect pointed to. I checked to see if lights were on in the house, they were, so I knocked on the door.
The door was answered by Mr. Gary E. Henderson, white male, 5'8", 135 pounds, brown hair, brown eyes, 21 years old, a resident of the house. I advised Mr. Henderson of the situation and he agreed to a one-on-one. The result was negative. Mr. Henderson said he would ask his roommates, who were home, if they had brothers fitting the description of the suspect. Neighbors in the area were not contacted due to the hour.
I then took three latent fingerprint cards from the passenger's door.
Mr. Smith is unsure as to whether he will aid in prosecution or not. Mr. Jones will aid in prosecution.
It should be noted that Mr. Smith and Jones felt threatened by the knife-swinging actions of the suspect. Neither victim sustained any injuries.
