Professional Skills and Abilities of Effective Teachers

As you read this chapter, remember that these are skills that effective teachers use consistently and proficiently. The better you are at incorporating them into your teaching style, the more your students will gain from instruction since research has linked them to students’ learning. Further, it has been shown that any teacher can learn to use these skills more effectively to increase learning in his or her classroom (Cruickshank, 1990; Feden, 1994; Gage, 1989; Joyce & Weil, 2000; Walberg, 1990). Consequently, we have incorporated practice exercises that will help you acquire these behaviors into Units 1, 2, and 3 of the Practice Teaching Manual.
