  • 40% New Readings. 33 of the 76 selections in the text are new in this edition, offering timely selections on topics such as cell phones, racial profiling, and the September 11 attacks.

  • New Chapter on Analyzing Texts. Complimenting the much-praised chapter on writing to analyze visuals, a new chapter features effective models of textual analysis on literary, Biblical, and legal texts. Each core text is followed by paired analyses that allow students to compare methods of textual analysis.

  • New Companion Texts. Special inserted texts that compliment and illuminate selected readings now appear throughout. These Companion Texts offer students either a contrary view of a subject or a critical context in which to view the reading.

  • New Readings on a Range of Interesting Topics. Like previous editions, the new readings offer students and instructors a wide range of high-interest readings on timely topics such as the outsourcing office jobs to India, digital manipulation of photographs, and same-sex sexuality in the animal kingdom. Additionally, the readings in each chapter present a range of accessible and challenging readings with the most challenging readings at the end of each chapter.

  • Added Emphasis on Audience in Each Chapter. Each chapter introduction includes a section on Considering Your Audience that helps students take their audience into account as they prepare to write for any purpose.

  • New Tips for Reading and Writing in Each Chapter. Each chapter introduction ends with a list of helpful guidelines for students as they read and write in a particular motive.

  • New Appendix on Writing from Sources. A new appendix on writing from sources offers students help with research and guidelines for writing both APA and MLA style papers. This appendix also contains a new model student research paper.

  • More Focused Chapter Titles. Several chapter titles have been changed to emphasize the progression of writing from the reflective to the expositional to the evaluative and analytical and finally to the persuasive and experimental.

  • Web Access Card: A bind-in card gives students and instructors access to a powerful online learning center, powered by CATALYST, the premier online tool for writing and research.
