Scientific Attitudes and Consumer Protection

Research psychologists, as you saw in Chapter 2, must adopt certain attitudes in order for them to carry out successfully the science of psychology. For example, scientists often are skeptical about new and sensational research findings because they know behavior and cognition are complex and because they also recognize that scientists are human--they make mistakes. Consumers, too, must be skeptical about advertisements for various products and services. Two organizations, the Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission, have websites that inform consumers about scams, fraudulent product claims, and deceptive business practices. Their advice is to be skeptical!
